Roxas, FCU-NSTP sign partnership for river rehab
ROXAS CITY – The Cadimahan River Rehabilitation Project was launched on November 20, with the signing of memorandum of understanding for its joint implementation by the Roxas City Government Unit through the City Agriculture Office-Coastal Resource Management, Lawis Baybay Fisherfolk Association of Roxas City and the Filamer Christian University-National Service Training Program.
Under the agreement, the students of FCU NSTP-CWTS are tasked to regularly plant mangrove propagules/seedlings in a designated river area and at the same time collect floating/stock garbage on the river, while the LABSFAR members will monitor and protect the planted mangrove trees from destruction and to ensure survival.
The City Government, for its part, will provide the technical orientation and assist in the supervision of the implementation.
The Cadimahan River Rehabilitation Project was initiated as a tourism project dubbed “Cadimahan-Libotong River Tour,” a potential tourist attraction near the city once it is fully developed.
Through the tour, visitors can “experience a refreshing and enriching ride through a river while observing different ways of fishing amid green mangroves and associated wildlife and interacting with fisherfolk as they tell their stories.”
The MOU was signed by Belinda Garrido, CRM coordinator; Josephine Monjuan, LABSFAR president; Adam Jesus Bering, FCU-NSTP coordinator; and Dr. George Cortel, FCU vice president for academic affairs.
The launching rites was also witnessed by Laura Heil, a Peace Corps volunteer of the City-CRM, and the 120 FCU-NSTP students who planted two mangrove propagules each after an orientation.*Adam Jesus B. Bering
