State of calamity declared in Roxas
ROXAS CITY – The City Council here has approved a resolution declaring a state of calamity in the city after flash floods hit its 22 barangays last week.
Acting City Social Welfare Lorelie Suelo recommended to Mayor Angel Alan Celino and the City Council to place the city under a calamity state so that the city government can use its calamity funds for relief operation.
Suelo also requested for the purchase of additional sacks of rice, 30 cartoons of noodles, and 20 cartoons of sardines to be distributed to affected families.
Heavy rains poured for four days from Thursday to Sunday in Capiz although there was no typhoon signal in Western Visayas.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported that three persons drowned while 38,178 persons were affected by the massive flooding.
It added that 138 barangays in the province went under water, including those in Roxas City.
The PDRRMC also reported that 18 barangays in Panay went under water, affecting 1,268 families or 6,340 persons, and leaving 522 houses damaged; Pontevedra, eight barangays, 698 families or 3,490 persons, with 375 persons evacuated to two temporary shelters.
Other affected towns are: Panitan, 20 brgys., 870 families or 3,897 persons; Sigma, 15 brgys., 2,087 families or 10,404 persons; Mambusao, 15 brgys., 1,844 families or 9,920 persons; Dumarao, 3 brgys., 130 families or 520 persons; Dao, 20 brgys., 448 families or 2,712 persons; and Roxas City, 8 brgys., 197 families or 885 persons, and Tapaz, one family or five persons.*
