Cop shoots young man to death; injures another
A policeman in San Enrique, Iloilo shot to death a young man, who tried to disarm him while he was responding to a fight involving the chief of Braulan village.
Police identified the fatality as Glenn Alim, 22, and his injured cousin, Regie Alarba, 25.
Both victims were shot by PO2 Ferdinand Palmares of San Enrique Police Station.
The incident started when village chief Cenon Palomaria asked for police assistance after Alarba went to his place and provoked his neighbors to a fight, according to Insp. Danny Lamera.
Palmares responded with some village watchmen.
When the group arrived, Alarba was inside a hut, having drinking session with Alim.
Both Alim and Alarba are Palomaria’s nephews.
Lamera said Palomaria then took the 12-gauge shotgun he saw beside the hut, but Alarba also tried to grab it, leaving them wrestling for the firearm.
Palomaria called for help and when Palmares intervened, Alim came to the defense of his cousin.
“He attacked Palmares and tried to disarm him,” Lamera said.
Alim, however, was hit by the firearm on the stomach. Alarba attempted to take away the firearm from Palmares, who quickly shot Alarba on the shoulder.
Lamera said Alarba pleaded for Palmares to stop shooting him, but when the policeman lowered his gun, Alarba jumped at him, prompting Palmares to fire at Alarba again, hitting him on the stomach and knee.
Alim and Alarba were brought to Passi City District Hospital, where Alim was declared dead.
Meanwhile, Palomaria said he saw no reason for his two nephews to provoke him to a fight.
He said their actions could have been a result of consumption of too much alcohol.*
