Free computer tutorial to 1,500 OSYs and IS workers, says DOLE
Some 1,500 out-of-school youths (OSYs), informal sector (IS) workers and other disadvantaged groups, in Western Visayas are expected to become computer-literate under the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) new project called Kabataan ITO (Information Technology Opportunities).
The Kabataan ITO is an information technology project aimed at mobilizing computer-savvy unemployed and underemployed youths to mentor and provide internet and computer-based technical assistance to out-of-school and other disadvantaged youths and IS workers. This will be done through free mentoring sessions on basic and practical computer operations, and supervised on-line access to government programs and services.
The DOLE 6 is set to launch this project together with other priority projects on the 3rd week of October, this year.
DOLE 6 Assistant Regional Director Crispin D. Dannug, Jr. said this project will improve computer-literacy among the OSYs, and other disadvantaged groups and bring the government closer to the people through free, supervised internet access to their online programs and services.
“Marami tayong mga out-of-school youths na nagnanais gumamit ng computer, kaya ito na ang kanilang pagkakataon,” he said.
Dannug called on non-computer literate OSYs and other disadvantaged groups to visit the DOLE provincial Offices nearest them to avail of the free mentoring lessons and become knowledgeable in basic and practical computer operations.
Dannug said that K-ITO Project will also enkindle the spirit of volunteerism among the youth-mentors and enable them to touch base with OSYs and other disadvantaged youths.
The DOLE will pay the youth-mentors a modest stipend of P25 per hour for mentoring participants and accommodating walk-in clients needing assistance to get access to government online services.
