UPV alumna gets Japanese recognition
Dr. Ma. Junemie Hazel L. Lebata-Ramos, a BS Biology and MS Fisheries alumna of UP Visayas, has been chosen as one of the three winners of the Japan International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers (JIAYAR) for 2009. The award is given by the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS). Dr. Lebata-Ramos will receive the award at the University of Tokyo in Japan on November 4, 2009 during which time, she will also make a 15-minute presentation of her research projects.
The award is a recognition of the contribution of young agricultural researchers to technological development for the improvement of food security and the environment in developing countries. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan started this program in 2007. It is supported by the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS).
Dr. Lebata-Ramos, with her co-authors, also received the prestigious Dr. Elvira O. Tan Memorial Award for best paper under the aquaculture and inland fisheries category in July this year. Her paper on the “Evaluation of hatchery-based enhancement of the mud crab, Scylla spp. fisheries in mangroves: Comparison of species and release strategies” won for her and her co-authors the award. Her co-writers are Lewis Le Vay, Mark Walton, Joseph Binas, Emilia Quinitio, Eduard Rodriguez, and Jurgenne Primavera. (Anna Razel L. Ramirez)
