Lightning kills ‘texting’ teener
A teenage boy was killed by a lightning bolt during a thunderstorm at Brgy. Bailan, Pontevedra, Capiz, Thursday afternoon.
Following a sudden rainshower, reports said that 16-year old Franz Cantores, also of the said place, sought cover under a tree.
Danilo Bensay, Cantores’ companion, claimed that he saw the victim texting while taking temporary shelter from a tree.
Bensay and several others decided to go ahead of Cantores after they had pulled some buri leaf to cover their head.
Shortly later, they learned that the teenager was already nowhere to be found.
When their companions saw the victim, he was already laying unconscious on the ground.
“Nagakulob siya sang makita sang mga kaupod namon. Sang una, indi ko magpati,” Bensay said.
Cantores succumbed to burn injuries on the back of his body.
His cellphone also incurred burn damages.
Observers surmised that the mobile phone signal caught the lightning bolt.
Cantores was still brought to Bailan District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
