'Read to Live: Libro Ko Para Sa 'Yo' reaches Ilonggos

To raise the awareness and appreciation of elementary pupils and high school students on the importance of reading, the Francis Padua PAPICA Foundation, Inc. based in California, USA distributed books and reading materials for 11 public schools in a program held on February 6, 2006 at the Conference Hall of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
The distribution of books to the recipient schools was spearheaded by the founder himself, Francis Padua and company with Iloilo Provincial SK Federation President Jeneda Salcedo.
The recipient schools were: Manuel L. Quezon Elem. School, Nabitasan Elem. School, Tabucan Elem. School, Taal Elem. School, A. Montes II Elem. School all of Iloilo City and Alimodian Elem. School in Miagao, Iloilo while for secondary schools were Bo. Obrero National High School, Ramon Avanceņa National High School, Melchor L. Nava National High School, La Paz National High School and Jalandoni Memorial National High School, also from the City of Iloilo.
Mr. Padua said about 2,000 books were distributed to these schools and this activity was firstly done in Western Visayas with Iloilo province as the recipient.
He said the activity was only the beginning of the foundation's philanthropic deeds with hope to give more books for their constituents especially those in the remotest areas in the Philippine Islands.
Padua said these books are donated by a publishing house in America.
They brought 50,000 books for their beneficiaries Pasay, Manila, Batangas and Bicol in Luzon, Iloilo in Visayas and Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao.
Meanwhile, Salcedo who represents the youth sector expressed her gladness that Iloilo Province was chosen by the foundation as one of their recipients.
She said she is trying to reach out to different public schools here to identify those schools that are in dire needs to reading materials especially in the barrio.
The program was attended by Provincial Administrator Manuel P. Mejorada, Board Member Cecilia H. Capadosa, chair SP Committee on Education and school principals. (Capitol News)
