Fifteen-year-old 3rd year high school Raymart Baido of the Iloilo City National High school in Molo, this city, romped away the first prize of the Sumakwelan Binalaybay Contest held on February 11, 2006 at Museo Iloilo. Baido's winning Binalaybay piece was "Sa Handong Sang Gugma". He received first prize cash award of P3,000 donated by Leganes Mayor Adolfo E. Jaen.
First year Nursing student Bethigil Marie A. Cabunagan of Saint Paul University Iloilo whose winning Binalaybay, "Diin Bala Ikaw Pakadto?" landed second and received a cash prize of P2,000 donated by Dr. Renato V. Alba, President of the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology. Fourteen-year-old second year high school student Niel S. Jualan of Pavia National High school whose master piece binalaybay, "Kalipay Sang Dughan", garnered 3rd place and received the cash award of P1,000 donated by Hon. Zafiro Palabrica, Provincial Agriculturist of Iloilo.
Consolation prize winners are: Jo Jan Paul J. Peņol of Pavia National High School, "Palangga Ko Ikaw"; Glacy Joy P. Estrevillo, "O Paghigugma, sa diin ka na?" of the Iloilo City National High School; Wharson Arguilles sang Central Philippine University, "Aton Pasanyugon Ang Hiligaynon Sa Aton Banwa"; Christian Zaldarriaga of Iloilo City National High School, "Hiligaynon: Dunang Manggad Sang Ilong-Ilonganon"; and Genelyn S. Traifalgar of SIPC-Western Visayas College of Science and Technology Miag-ao, Iloilo, and the Binalaybay piece, "Pag-ulikid Kag Kabalaka Sa Pag Uswag Sang Pulong Ilonggo". Consolation pr ize and support services donors of P2,000 is Hon. Angel B. Briones, SP Board Member of Iloilo and P500 cash each are DOT Regional Director Edwin Trompeta; Consultants of Iloilo Governor Former Mayors Ramon Antiojo and Truman Lim and Engr. Agapito Tioco; Dr. Pedro Gaton, Municipal Councilor of Guimbal, Iloilo; Asst. Schools Division Superintendent of Iloilo DepEd Elnora A. Pahunao; Asst. Schools Division Superintendent DepEd Iloilo City Febe A. Cang; Provincial Statistics Officer of Iloilo of the National Statistics Office Harry B. Dolendo; Hon. Romeo Ledesma, Municipal Councilor of Tigbauan, Iloilo and J.V.D. Perez of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
Hon. Jed Mabilog, City Councilor of Iloilo, donated medals for the first three major prizes and the five consolation prizes. Sumakwelan Iloilo honored also the major prize winners by awarding them Certificates of Recognition and Certificates of Participation to all participating contestants.
More than a hundred students,coaches, school teachers, government officials and employees and Binaylaybay fans witnessed the young people expound their mastery in Hiligaynon Poetry. The Binalaybay contest was held inside the spacious show room of Museo Iloilo through the kindness of Trustee Zafiro Laguda Ledesma II. This is the 3rd Binalaybay contest held in the City during the incumbency of Dr. Rodolfo P. Gumabong, incumbent president of Sumakwelan Iloilo. The members of the board of judges of the Binalaybay contest sponsored by Sumakwelan Iloilo were MTCC Judge Nilo P. Pamonag, chief judge Crisostomo Balairos, Faustino Ramos Barangay Captain Fernando Junsan and Rody Gumabong. There were 16 schools that participated including some of their coaches.
Sumakwelan Iloilo would like to thank the mass media, donors, friends , and supporters of the Binalaybay contest for making possible this year's contest with the theme, "Pasanyugon ng pulong Hiligaynon sa aton puod."
