Experimental class for mechanical engineering graduates to start
Here is an opportunity for children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who are Mechanical Engineering graduates and would want to build a good career in the seafaring industry.
The Department Of Labor and Employment (DOLE) through the Maritime Training Council will open an experimental class designed to convert Mechanical Engineering graduates to Marine Engineers.
Overseas Workers Welfare Administration 6 (OWWA 6) Director II Saul de Vries said, the course is set to open in March 2006 and will run 6 to 8 months with 4 months On-Board training. This will be offered by the Maritime Academy in Bataan.
Qualified for this program are children of active OFWs who are members of OWWA and must not be more than 30 years old by the time they finish the course.
De vries said that after the On-Board training, an assessment will be done on a student before he is given a diploma that qualifies him to take the Marine Engineer Licens ure Examination. If he passes the exam, he is assured of a job with the tie-up companies.
De Vries said the program is part of the steps taken by the government to strengthen the country's capacity to supply the needed marine officers to the global seafaring industry estimated at some 35,000 officers the next five to 10 years.
