Treñas asks for approval of P100T aid to landslide victims
City Mayor Jerry Treñas will ask the approval of the Sangguniang Panlungsod today for the release of P100,000 as the city's financial assistance to the landslide victims in Barangay Guinsaugon, Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte.
The chief executive who is also the president of the League of Cities in the Philippines also appealed to the league's members to extend financial donations to the landslide victims
Treñas said he expects the council will act on his urgent letter to Sangguniang Panlungsod for the passage of an appropriation ordinance for the release of the P100,000 financial assistance in today's (Wednesday) regular session. The P100,000 financial assistance is chargeable to the city's five percent calamity fund.
He said it is the moral and social responsibility of every Filipino to reach out and extend help to fellow Filipinos in times of disasters and calamities. The financial assistance would be coursed through to the provincial government of Southern Leyte.
Treñas added that he has already talked to Gov. Rosette Lerias on the immediate needs of the landslide victims. The survivors have so many needs such as food, potable water, medicine, clothes, mosquito nets, and blankets.
Aside from local assistance, foreign aid continues to pour in for the victims of the landslide. Among those who expressed their desires to extend financial help are the governments of Australia, China and Greece. The Taiwanese government also brought thermo-imaging equipment to find buried victims. Reports have it that 72 bodies have been recovered and 1,350 are still missing.
