Mabilog proposes bicycle lane in Iloilo City
After the night market, Councilor Jed Patrick Mabilog has came up with another ambitious proposal for the city as he wants to pass an ordinance providing a bicycle lane in certain roads in Iloilo City.
In last Wednesday's regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, sponsored an ordinance providing a bicycle lane in certain city roads. The proposed ordinance was approved in first reading.
In his proposed ordinance, Mabilog wants that bicycle lanes will be provided in the streets of Luna, Jereos, Burgos-Mabini, all in La Paz district. He also wants to have bicycle lanes in the streets of Rizal, Commission Civil, M.H. Del Pilar and E. Lopez, all in Jaro district.
The proponent likewise wants to establish bicycle lanes in Lopez Jaena Street, Molo; Timawa Street also in Molo and in Delgado Street, Iloilo City.
In his proposed ordinance, Mabilog cited the continuing increase in the prices of petroleum products which resulted to high fares in public utility vehicles.
He also said one of the leading causes of death is heart attack due to lack of exercise where health studies would show that 60 percent of Ilonggos have been diagnosed to be overweight and is in high risk.
The bicycle users have increased their numbers in the city and the creation of bicycle lane could possibly reduce the congestion of the motor vehicles in the city.
The proponent added that in foreign cities such as Amsterdam, Netherlands; Tokyo, Japan and Beijing, China have been using bicycles as their major mode of transportation and big cities in the Philippines such as Quezon City, Makati City and Naga City have created bicycle lanes for the commuters.
