Two years to defeat CPP-NPA is attainable, says Aklan PNP
Kalibo, Aklan -- Even if President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo sets only one year to end the threat of the CPP-NPA in our country, it could be attained -- if the people will cooperate. Nothing is impossible if we help each other.
This was the straight answer of Aklan Police Provincial Office (APPO) Provincial Director William S. Macavinta when queried as to the attainability of PGMA's given timetable to eradicate the communist rebels.
Speaking for Aklan, Macavinta said the CPP-NPA is not so active anymore and are evidently losing support of the people.
"In two years, no atrocities were committed in the province. We are winning here, so I believe the timetable given to eradicate the enemies is feasible. We are, however, not letting our guards down," stressed Macavinta.
To show that the Philippine National Police here means business, Macavinta said they are continuously patrolling Aklan's mountainous areas. The PNP is also very active in the municipalities conducting civic actions and medical missions to win the hearts and minds of the people and win their support.
Macavinta said the PNP is firm on its resolve to eradicate the CPP-NPA, and called on the people to stop supporting the rebels and giving in to demands of revolutionary taxes.
As to measures to protect themselves, Macavinta said he constantly reminds his personnel all over the province never to discount the possibility of any attack.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has recently announced the release of P1 billion insurgency fund to stress her determination to wipe out the communist rebels, and ordered the national security group to work with the Department of Budget and Management on selected hardware and funding aside from P5 billion per year modernization that will give a decisive edge against the NPA.
