CODHHEP to hold national symposium in Iloilo City
The Council of Deans and Heads of Home Economics of the Philippines (CODHHEP) with the West Visayas College of Science and Technology College (WVCST) of Education -- TLE and Home Economics Department will hold a national symposium entitled " Challenges and Perspectives in Home Economics Amidst Globalization" on July 20, 2006 at the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology main campus in Iloilo City.
During the symposium, CODHHEP will echo the information and concepts gleaned from the ASEAN Regional Association of Home Economics (ARAHE) Congress held in Singapore on August 2-5, 2005. The concepts covered Home Economics' coping with globalization issues, which were primarily on economic competition and environmental resource utilization.
According to Prof. Merlinda Tabaldo Tucar, CODHHEP coordinator for Visayas and Mindanao, the symposium has been strongly endorsed by Commission on Higher Education Officer-In-Charge Saturnino Ocampo, Jr. as Home Economics teachers and administrators will greatly benefit from the activity, which will update and prepare them in the rapidly changing developments in Home Economics management against the huge factor of globalization.
Internationally renowned educator and Director of the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus will be the main resource speaker.
Two other symposia after the one in Iloilo City have been scheduled. The second one will be held at the Philippine Normal University (PNU) in Metro Manila on September 24, 2005. This will be for National Capital Region participants. The third one will be held at the Pangasinan State University on November 26, 2006. This will be for Luzon participants.
Other symposium objectives aside from the echoing of the ARAHE current concerns and directions regarding the strengthening of family life amidst globalization are: 1) to promote research culture in Home Economics technology; 2) to encourage and promote entrepreneurial skills in Home Economics to meet the challenges of globalization; and 3) to initiate and strengthen linkages in Home Economics.
CODHHEP was organized in 1970 after a seminar of deans and heads of Home Economics in private schools through the initiative of Ms. Amanda Trinidad, supervisor of Home Economics in the Bureau of Private Schools, Department of Education was held in Bagiuo City. The agendum was to organize a quality group of home economists to assist the Bureau of Private Schools in upgrading Home Economics education in the country.
Home Economics teachers, heads and administrators from the public and private schools are invited to participate in the Iloilo City symposium..
