DA-WV told formulate alternative livelihood program for Guimaras folks
Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban directed the Regional Field Unit in Iloilo to coordinate with the local government in Region VI to formulate alternative livelihood program to assist fisherfolks who were affected by the MT Solar 1 oil spill in Guimaras.
The agriculture secretary who was in Sitio Lusaran, Barangay Lapaz in Nueva Valencia last August 25 said in an interview that the agriculture department has mobilized its bureaus and agencies to help affected residents of the oil spill, particularly those in the 17 coastal barangays in Nueva Valencia and Sibunag.
During the first visit of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the DA's quick response for the immediate rehabilitation and livelihood assistance were turned over to the local government of Guimaras. The assistance included the following: 3,700 packets of assorted vegetable seeds; piglets and chickens.
In a PIA interview with Administrator Malcolm Sarmiento of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, it was learned that the BFAR have donated ten units of multi-purpose boats which are 28 footers along with gill nets, squid jiggers and other fishing gears.
During the August 29 visit to Guimaras province, President Arroyo was pleased with the expeditious cleanup of the oil spill with the help and support of the international community and expressed optimism that the island province will regain its standing as a tourist destination sooner or later.
Meanwhile, Press Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye said in a statement that President Arroyo has ordered the DOTC to work with the oil industry and the maritime sector on a comprehensive review of the existing rules and regulations on the transport of oil and chemicals using sea routes and forge a permanent basis for cooperation between the government and oil companies on the issue of environmental safety and preservation.
