City cops told to increase visibility
City Mayor Jerry Treñas has directed newly installed Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) Director Sr. Supt. Wesley Barayuga to increase police visibility particularly at the old Calle Real, now JM Basa St., and strengthen their campaign against street crimes.
Trenas' order came following two recent robberies at the city's old commercial district. The recent robbery took place in one of the stores along Aldeguer Street. The robberies happen during Sundays where most of the commercial establishments are closed for business operation. .
He said police should patrol the area to prevent any robbery in the old commercial center. The presence of policemen will deter the commission of the crime.
Treñas was assured by Barayuga on the additional presence of policemen in the city's commercial district. The police will reportedly trim down their personnel assigned in the offices and put them on the field.
The campaign against street crimes was also given emphasis by the mayor after he received reports that there is an increase in the city's street crimes.
Meanwhile, Treñas said he will not dip his fingers on the proposed plan of the new city police director to effect a reorganization among the chiefs of police, to pave way for a better police service.
Treñas said he normally does not meddle in the police operation and management since he assumed as mayor of the city especially when it comes to rotation of chiefs of police. "It is just a mere 'rigodon'. Even city police directors are changed every two years," he said.
There is "nothing unusual" in the proposed plan to initiate a revamp among the chiefs of police. It is much better for the city director to implement the reorganization in order to avoid "familiarization" among the chiefs of police and the suspected violators in their area of assignment, said Treñas.
