Capiz remains brontispa-free
Roxas City -- The province's coconut trees and ornamental palms remain free from infestation of brontispa longissima that has invaded the Panay Island recently.
Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) – Capiz Provincial Office records revealed that the coconut leaf beetle have reached the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras and Aklan particularly in Boracay Island.
"Quarantine checkpoints will be conducted in the various entry roads to the province to prevent entry of the pest," said PCA Provincial Coconut Development Manager Jeffrey Delos Reyes.
A task force "Save the Coconut" will be created by the provincial government that will formulate policies and strategies to maintain the province's brontispa-free status.
The task force will also solicit support from the various local government units in the implementation of checkpoints.
Earlier, the provincial government received an urgent request from PCA Administrator Oscar Garin to help in the campaign for a nationwide effort to implement effective control measures towards the eradication of the spreading infestation on coconut trees and ornamental palms.
The PCA is also urging the public to report to its respective provincial offices and local government units any sighting of brontispa- infested coconut tree to help contain the rapidly spreading coconut pest.
Brontispa is a coconut leaf beetle that feeds on the soft tissues of coconut fronds which then appear burned or scorched enough to kill the coconut. (PIA)
