Treñas confirms endorsing Ong for Liga prexy
City Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday confirmed reports that he is endorsing Punong Barangay Irene Ong of Brgy. President Roxas, City Proper in the race for Liga ng mga Barangay federation president. He said he has already given his commitment to Ong.
Treñas said he believes in the capacity of Ong to become an ex-officio member of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. Ong is the current chapter president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in the City Proper.
Reportedly, Ong is also the favored candidate of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez from among the 180 barangay captains in the city.
Earlier, Gonzalez also pushed for the assumption of Ortiz Barangay Captain Boy Castellano as the Liga president replacing former ex-officio member Councilor Marietta Orleans. Castellano did not make it since the court and law governing Liga ng mga Barangay ruled in favor of Orleans.
Treñas said Ong has been active in the barangay affairs in President Roxas and the entire city proper. He said it is her edge against anyone who is planning to join in the Liga election. As to date, there are no other newly-elected punong barangays who asked for the mayor's endorsement.
When asked on whether he has plans to endorse other barangay captains to run in the Liga election other than Ong, Treñas said he will have to assess on whether he has to favorably endorse other candidates for the Liga election.
Recently, the names of Barangay Capt. Emilio Locsin of North Baluarte and Barangay Capt. Jerry Mabilog, brother of Vice Mayor Jed Mabilog cropped up as among the contenders for the Liga ng Barangay post.
The vice mayor denied reports saying his brother has no plans to run for the said position.
The chief executive said he was with Mabilog yesterday and the vice mayor made no mention about his brother's plan for the Liga election.
