Treñas to seek support of brgy officials on solid waste program
City Mayor Jerry Treñas is set to meet with the newly elected barangay officials to ask their full support on the city government's solid waste management program. The meeting, which has no definite date yet, will be arranged by City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) chief Engr. Noel Hechanova.
Treñas specifically wants to meet the barangay chairmen of the city's coastal barangays as well as those living at the bank of the Iloilo River. The chief executive will discuss to them his concern over the Iloilo River. The waste dumped in the river by individuals and other establishments contributes to the pollution of said body of water.
It was learned that Treñas wants the participation of barangay officials in order to address the waste disposal problem. The city government has already conducted some 21 seminars on waste disposal program and the use of Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). However, it did not made any significant improvement on the city's waste disposal problem.
In 2006, 242,725 tons of garbage was generated in Metro Iloilo-Guimaras. The daily generated waste reached to 665 tons. Iloilo City generates 46 percent of the total generated waste. Oton and Guimaras produce 20 percent and 13 percent, respectively.
In Metro Iloilo, 62 percent of solid waste is generated by households and another 14 percent by commercial establishments including public markets. Forty two percent of the city's waste is recyclable.
