DOH warns parents to keep children off from firecrackers
Parents in Western Visayas are reminded of safe toys fit for children this Christmas where all forms of toys and pyrotechnics stuff are already displayed for sale.
The reminder was made by Dr.Erwin G.Solas, regional coordinator of "Fourmula Kontra Paputok" program of the Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas during the PIA-CATV program.
Dr. Solas said that the victims of firecrackers blast are getting younger each year if compared to the adult group victims in Western Visayas last year where 40% of children aging from 0-10 years old were injured by firecrackers, and 36% for children aging 11-20 years old. Only 10% for the 41-50 years age group were recorded injured by firecrackers ; one percent for 50 years and up ; 8 percent- 31 to 30 years old ; 8% for 21 to 30 years old ; and five percent for the 31-40 years old age group.
He said that the data were based on the record from Western Visayas Medical Center in Iloilo City and the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.
"So this holiday season, let us give safe toys for our children," Dr . Solas said during the PIA-CATV program.
He said that toys play a vital role as a stimulus for the mental growth and development of children . B ut they can be harmful and cause accidents when misused and unsuited for their age.
No toy can be considered truly safe for a particular child, unless he or she is mentally and physically capable of using it properly, the DOH concluded.(T.Villavert/PIA)
