Task Force Asis clears sidewalk of illegal structures
City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the Task Force Asis has started to clear the sidewalks of illegal structures in accordance to the city's ordinance prohibiting illegal structures along the sidewalks. Makeshift structures bearing the "Uswag Iloilo" slogan are not spared.
Before the election period, the sidewalks were flooded with makeshift kiosks with "Uswag Iloilo" slogans.
Treñas said all the sidewalks, especially in the downtown area, would be cleared of illegal structures. The ordinance must be implemented to all vendors occupying portion of the sidewalks which affect the passageway of pedestrians.
It was not immediately known whether the move to clear the sidewalks of illegal structures is also in response to the study being conducted by Concep, a group which got the P4.7 million contract from the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) to conduct pre-feasibility studies on the proposed construction of an eco-port and revitalization of the Central Business District (CBD) or the old Calle Real.
Earlier, Concep consultants said they have to take a look at the mushrooming sidewalk vendors on the city's main streets in their plan to revitalize business in the old Calle Real. The sidewalk vendors would likely be affected with the plan as they want to compete with the services and products available in the shopping malls to encourage shoppers.
The consultants were given six months to finish their pre-feasibility studies for the CBD's revitalization and the proposal to put up the eco-port at the Philippine Coast Guard area.
