The Ilonggos' celebration of the University of the Philippines' centennial commemoration will literally kick off with a bang during the highlights of festivities in July.
The U.P SILAK Brotherhood and U.P. SILAB Sisterhood have announced that they will sponsor a fireworks display at the UP in the Visayas Iloilo City campus on July 22, the first day of the week-long celebrations that will culminate on July 26.
Jose Luis "Joe" Reyes, president of the UP SILAK Brotherhood Alumni Association Iloilo chapter, said resident and alumni members of the brotherhood and sisterhood will raise funds to shoulder the fireworks display.
The fireworks display will be preceded by by a jam session with the multi-awarded and top retro band Spirit of '67 at the UPV auditorium. The event will also be sponsored by SILAK and SILAB.
Proceeds of the jam session will be donated to the proposed mini-theater to be constructed at the UPV Iloilo City campus.
Reyes said the two events are part of their organization's projects and programs to help the university.
"We are proud of being part of U.P.'s glorious tradition of excellence and service. This is our way of
giving back to the university that has nurtured our brotherhood, which now counts thousands of members in all fields and professions here and abroad," said Reyes.
The U.P. SILAK Brotherhood is an organization of Hiligaynon-speaking students in the U.P system. Established at the Diliman campus on September 21, 1971, the brotherhood has now three autonomous chapters at UPV's main campus in Miag-ao, Iloilo; Iloilo City campus and UP in Diliman.
UPV and SILAK alumni representatives have signed a memorandum of agreement on the holding of the jam session and the fireworks display. The MOA-signing held at the SILAK tambayan at the UPV Iloilo City campus was attended by Dr. Ma. Luisa Mabunay, UPV Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension; Amy Daquilanea-Tanoy, Director of the UPV Office of Alumni Relations, event organizer Jane Javellana of MYOB Ventures and Nilda Lopez-Exmundo, whose family will be donating the equipment and interior furnishings for the mini-theater.
