Yearly gain of P1.5-P2M seen in operation of new abattoir
The city government is expected to gain some P1.5 to P2 million every year once the multi-billion double A standard slaughterhouse in Barangay Tacas, Jaro becomes operational. There will be a test run of the abattoir on April 20 in preparation for its full operation in May.
City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the projected yearly gain of P1.5 million to P2 million was made by City Veterinarian Tomas Forteza. The city will also need additional personnel to oversee the operation of the modern slaughterhouse.
The new slaughterhouse with a holding pen for animals, hog line and waste water treatment facility is situated in the 2.3 hectares lot purchased by the city government.
Treñas is hopeful that the operation will indeed bring gains to the city. Aside from the regular market for slaughtered animals, two companies engaged in the meat processing have expressed their intention of having business with the city government. He, however refused to identify the two companies as it might affect their current transaction with other slaughterhouses.
Currently, 40 cattles and 300 pigs are slaughtered daily, said Treñas.
In yesterday's interview, the chief executive could not give the exact amount of the new slaughterhouse. Bulk of the funding for the construction of the slaughterhouse came from the Department of Agriculture through its National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS). The department has allocated P21 million for the project to cover the the Building A worth P6 million, P5.5 million for the holding pen, P5.5 million for waste water treatment facility and installation of hog line equipment which is P5.5 million.
The waste water treatment facility consists of a series of lagoons wherein waste water is filtered and finally recycled for other uses, while the holding pen is a waiting area for animals to be slaughtered.
As its counterpart, the city government bought the lot, built a road, boiler room and constructed a fence along the property to protect the new facility. While, Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr will provide one electric generator worth P1.5 million. The city sought an P11 million soft loan from the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (DA-ACEF) to complete the additional civil works, cattle line equipment and concreting of access road.
On the plan to sell the property, the chief executive said he will still consult the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod about it. The consensus of the city council is needed in order to dispose the property. The city is still tracing where the title of the property is, said Treñas.
