Jaro I Elementary School fourth grader qualifies for Int'l Math Olympiad
Lorenzo Carlos Baquiran, a fourth grader of Jaro I Elementary School, has made it among the 16 Grade Four Qualifiers for the 2008 Young Mathematicians Intensive Training Program conducted in Cebu City last March 23 – 28, 2008.
Together with the other qualifiers for grade IV and other grade levels, Baquiran attended the National Mathematics In-house Intensive training in Manila from April 14 – May 14, 2008 in preparation for the International Mathematics Olympiad.
Baquiran, is the only Grade IV qualifier from the public elementary school to represent the Philippines in the Olympiad. It was initially among 800 elementary school pupils from various public and private elementary schools nationwide who converged at the Crown Regency Residences in Cebu City from March 23 to 28, 2008 for the elementary edition of the event, where he landed among the 16 coveted slots for the Grade IV level.
Baquiran is a consistent honor pupil from our school since grade I, and he is noted for her outstanding achievements in Mathematics. He has a twin brother, Lorenzo who is similarly a consistent academic awardee.
Jaro I Elementary School, Baquiran's academic institution, is one of the 52 public elementary schools in the Division of Iloilo City.
The young mathematicians' Intensive In-house Training Program has been conducted at the start of summer for 12 years now by the Mathematics Trainiers' Guild – Philippines, an organization committed to the promotion of advanced Mathematics education in the country through competitions.
This is a gathering of the brightest young mathematically gifted pupils from all over the Philippines and serves a the final try-outs for the MTG's pool of students who will represent the country in the future international math competitions.
