Barangay exec dares Bing to close new slaughterhouse for lack of DENR permits
BACOLOD CITY -- Barangay 34 Punong Barangay Richard C. Sason called on Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia to shut down the slaughterhouse at Barangay Handumanan until it is able to secure a Discharge Permit and Permit to Operate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Sason issued this call after the Environmental Management Bureau of DENR Regional Office in Iloilo City released the findings of its investigation report conducted last August 29, 2008 that the new Bacolod slaughterhouse started its operations last August 16, 2008 without securing the necessary Discharge Permit and Permit to Operate from DENR.
"I am calling on the city government to take the necessary action and impose the corresponding penalty to the operator of the Handumanan slaughterhouse because of this violation. In the meantime and in the absence of said permits, the city should stop the operation of the said slaughterhouse," Sason declared.
The DENR inspection report submitted by Desiderio C. Figueroa also showed that the new slaughterhouse failed to meet the DENR Effluent Standard in terms of the wastewater samples and the total suspended solids from its Wastewater Treatment Facility.
"The city government has shown abuse and inconsideration in closing down small businesses in the city due to some minor or technical problems in the acquisition of business permits and yet the Handumanan slaughterhouse has operated without the necessary papers from DENR," Sason lamented.
