8 coastal brgys get disaster preparedness training
ROXAS CITY – A two-day skills training for Barangay Disaster Coordinating Council (BDCC) and barangay disaster preparedness plan formulation was conducted last September 26 to 27 at the Roxas City Hall's Conference Room here.
The live-out activity was participated in by about 100 barangay officials, barangay secretaries and treasurers, and tanods from Roxas City barangays of Barra, Culajao, Culasi, Libas, Baybay, Cogon, Punta Cogon and Dumulog.
"The speakers during the training came from Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Office – 6 as well as Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)," said OCD Civil Defense Officer – designate in Capiz Ana Gangoy.
The activity was supported by Roxas City Mayor Vicente Bermejo.
It is in line with President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo's directive to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) to work closely with Local Government Units (LGUs) to come up with appropriate disaster preparedness measures to ensure that the country will be prepared when disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes strike.
Recently, the President said that prompt reaction and proper coordination would surely minimize losses in life, agriculture, livestock and properties particularly during the onset of impending calamities during her meeting with the Eastern Visayas Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC).
The President also ordered the RDCC to immediately conduct a rapid geological assessment of the region to be able to pinpoint and assess which barangays are susceptible or highly prone to disasters like typhoons, landslides, flooding and even tsunamis. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
