DENR cites positive impact of intensified agro-forestry program
Mitigating the impact of climate change and providing livelihood opportunities for upland dwellers, are the two positive results of the agro-forestry program which will be intensified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The DENR press report disclosed that the agro-forestry program will involve massive planting of fruit-bearing trees within our forests. The funds will come from the P2 billion committed by President Arroyo for he purpose which she announced during her State of the Nation Address.
DENR Secretary Lito Atienza told the Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc., recently, that the agro-forestry initiative will also turn upland dwellers into "stewards" of their own environment, which is actually the best way of protecting the country's natural resources.
"Several millions of our countrymen live in upland areas. They will be principally responsible in planting and nurturing the trees. They will also be the principal beneficiaries of the fruits of their labor, which will likewise benefit us all and the earth," the DENR Secretary said.
He said that the DENR will forge partnerships with various stakeholders in order to achieve the common goal of having a clean environment and, providing more jobs for the people.
Atienza said that the President envisioned a nationwide upland development plan that is anchored on agro-forestry improvement and reforestation. (PIA)
