City to use street-lights alternately
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has ordered the City Engineer's Office to alternate the use of sodium lamps at main thoroughfares here beginning at 10 P.M. daily in a latest cost-saving measure to reduce the city government's monthly power bills.
Treñas told city department heads that it is time the city adopt cost-saving initiatives to cut down on monthly electric bills that sometimes reach a whopping P8-million a month. He said that alternately using the street lights would save on electric consumption.
Earlier this year, Treñas ordered all offices and barangay officials to help in cost-saving measures by switching to cost-efficient CFL lamps and to minimize the use of power in public gymnasiums and other city government facilities city-wide.
Treñas said the alternate use of sodium lamps will not compromise the safety of the public since the areas identified for alternate use will still be well-lit and metro police have likewise been ordered to make regular patrols in public areas.
As this developed, Treñas has been apprised that the city has one of the highest power rates in the country. The mayor, however, is optimistic that the establishment of the coal-fired power plant in La Paz district will dramatically reduce the present outrageous rates. (PIO)
