De Castro to grace groundbreaking rites for Habitat housing project
Vice President and Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) Chairman Noli de Castro will grace the groundbreaking ceremony for an initial 500 houses to be built at the city-owned San Isidro, Jaro relocation site on November 21.
The ceremony will signal the start of the construction of houses intended for the informal settlers displaced by the giant flood control project and families affected by Typhoon Frank last June 21-22.
City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the 500 houses are part of the national government's pro-poor program and the efforts are spearheaded by the HUDCC, Department of Social Welfare and Development and United Nations Habitat for Humanity programme.
Treñas said that aside from HUDCC-Habitat housing project, the 16-hectare San Isidro relocation site will also host the 450 housing units of Gawad Kalinga composed of 150 units funded by the congressional allocation of Iloilo City Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr., 50 units funded by Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, and another 60 units to be funded by Panay Electric Company (PECO).
The relocation site will also host 120 units to be funded by urban poor people's organizations and another 500 units proposed to be funded by the Italian government.
The beneficiaries are informal settlers displaced by government projects, calamity victims and those living in danger zones. (PNA)
