SP body resolves anti-townhood plea of Northern Iloilo locals
The Capitol's Committee on Ordinances, Legal Matters and Inter-Government Relations firmed up its stance on an appeal "strongly opposing" the creation of a new town in Iloilo.
Contained in Committee Report No. 92, committee chair Fourth District Board Member George Demaisip presented committee findings in yesterday's special session.
The committee took off on its deliberations following receipt of Resolution No. 2008-21 of the Municipality of Ajuy. Further still came Resolution No. 2008-1 of the Liga ng mga Barangay here likewise stating its objection.
Both Resolutions manifested dissent on the passage of House Bill No. 3753 introduced by Fifth District Representative Niel Tupas Jr..
The Committee recommended that Congress note three major factors. First off, eleven barangays mentioned in the "Bill" failed to meet the minimum population requirement of 25,000 inhabitants. Secondly, "by the passage of the "Bill," the income classification of the Municipality of Ajuy will fall below and downgrade its current income classification prior to the division."
Thirdly, "without Barangay Luca, forming part of the eleven barangays mentioned in the "Bill," the land area of the proposed new Municipality will not be contiguous."
And should there be further amendments still, the Committee likewise called for barangay participation "acting through their respective Sangguniangs, in the form of Resolution, expressing their interest to form a new Municipality."
To note, no such Resolutions of support were submitted to Congress.
