Fisherfolk avail of livelihood project
SAN JOSE, Antique -- Fisherfolk in the town of Patnongon received livelihood assistance from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in support the Hunger Mitigation Program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Mayor Henry Mondejar of Patnongon said that project will provide marginal fisherfolk source of income and increase fish production that will boost food security and eventually reduce incidence of hunger and malnutrition in the municipality.
A total of 35 fisherfolk-families availed of monofilament nylons and hooks in the amount of P66,925.00, a grant from BFAR turned over recently to the beneficiaries at the municipal gym of Patnongon attended by the local officials.
The beneficiaries committed to take good care of the fishing paraphernalia at the same time maximize the use of it to increase income and help family get out of poverty.
Food security and poverty alleviation is one of the major development agenda of the present administration. Ensuring availability and accessibility of food to all Filipinos is the focus of government agencies involved in the hunger mitigation program. The fisheries sector is an important economic sector in the country which creates employment and income among the people including the marginal fisherfolk. (Patnongon/PIA)
