CHR engages USA for HR declaration 60th anniversary
The University of San Agustin (USA), through its Coordinating Center for Research and Publications, was engaged by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) RO6 in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 2008.
This year's week-long celebration will fall on 4-10 December, with the theme "Dignity and Justice for All of Us." Activities will include a lecture marathon, jail visits, legal clinics, film-showing, exhibits, a concert and an essay writing contest, among others. USA and CHR's partnership will be on the conduct of a lecture marathon all over Panay, an exhibit on women's rights, and a regional essay writing contest.
The lecture will focus on the UDHR and other Human Rights Issues, and will be held in the following venues: AVR, St. Anthony's College in San Jose, Antique at 8:30 A.M. and AVR, St. Joseph Building of the Advance Central College in San Jose, Antique at 10:00 A.M., both on Tuesday, 2 December; Gymnasium of the Aklan Catholic College in Kalibo, Aklan at 8:00 A.M. on Wednesday, 3 December; Roblee Hall of Filamer Christian College in Roxas City at 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, 3 December; and Liga Hall in Estancia, Iloilo at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, 4 December.
The exhibit on Women's Rights will be held at the University of San Agustin on 10-12 December, with the Martin de Rada Human Rights Bureau as co-organizer. It will include poster-exhibits on the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), paintings, and other campaign materials.
The Essay Writing Contest is open to all High School students all over the region. An invitation to the youth to express their views and ideas on the UDHR through an essay, it is an attempt to gauge how well the 60-year campaign has impacted the "hope of the motherland." The winning entries will be published for general circulation.
This engagement forms part of the many others entered into by USA and CHR, in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both in 2002.
