Annual wishes
It’s 2009 and the year is fresh and new for all of us to dabble into! We have a clean slate – some of us have things carried over, but we have a clean slate nevertheless; we are given another opportunity to do something different with our lives. If we do have something carried over, then its about time we figure out something new to do with whatever we have carried over.
Personally, I think the passing of time is just a state of mind; nothing really changes except the numbers on the calendar. It’s a bit confusing for me who tries to live each day at a time, but I cope, nevertheless. For me the New Year is another full twelve months of wishes; wishes that could either come true or just remain as wishes. People say that the materialization of our wishes totally depend on us – true; therefore, whatever wishes I have for 2009 will remain as wishes if I don’t act on them; and if I don’t act on them, they get carried over to 2010 just like the wishes I made for 2008. This week, let me share with you ten of my wishes (some are carried over from 2007 pa) so that by this time next we’ll know which ones I acted on and which ones got carried over. Anyway, let me invite you as well, to come up with your own ‘annual wishlist’ to at least give you an idea of what you really want your new year to be – junk the new year’s resolutions, none of these gets kept anyway, this is true blue strategic planning in its simplest.
1. Travel abroad – well, this has been a wish that has been carried over since the year I realized I had so much to see of the world! I don’t want to work abroad though, because that is a lame excuse for escapism. People who work abroad want easy money because they claim they work their asses off here in our country and don’t get the compensation they want – truth is, these are people who never get contented with what they already have and want more – pathetic. I just want to see the world – problem is, I don’t have enough money yet – oh, and that doesn’t mean that I will work abroad just to get this wish, I will get it, eventually.
2. Start with my PhD – this one is another carried over wish. The reason for its not being materialized is plain and simple – I don’t want to go to any other university but UPD, and as a government employee, you all know how it is when you have to take a leave for education, plus, I don’t have enough saved up also for the entire 3-year program, so let’s just hope that by some strange twist of fate, this wish gets acted upon this year. I hope I get a scholarship, hehehe;-)
3. Get internet connection in my office – the main reason for this wish not being materialized is my hectic schedule. I wasn’t able to make a request for this to our mayor last year. I know it will get approved; it’s just that I haven’t found time to compose the request yet.
4. Get promoted – hmmm, this is a bit challenging because at the moment, my item in the local government does not have an item above it, meaning, my promotion is yet to be created, well, let’s see what I can do to lobby for this.
5. Publish a book – well, frankly I don’t have enough material yet, and I doubt if anyone will read whatever I publish, hehehehehehe.
6. Finally map out the historical and cultural site in Roxas City – I had this planned a year ago, but never got to it because of my terribly busy schedule especially towards year’s end when I had to be in Manila almost twice a week, whew!
7. Invest in my own house – well, I just somehow realized that it’s about time that I did this for myself – I didn’t really find a need for it until now.
8. Bake a cake on my own – I cook quite well, but I never really gathered up the guts to bake a cake on my own, the possibility of having it come out flat from the oven is simply too much for me. Well, I hope I get passed that this year. Hopefully, I could bake a perfectly eatable cake.
9. Conquer my acrophobia – yup, I have acrophobia, and it is very crippling at times, especially when I want to go to the ‘Toys r’ Us’ store at the top floor of Robinsons Place Ermita! Is there a shrink out there who can help me get past this?
10. Spend more time sleeping – I realized I have been sleep deprived for the past year – I began having nosebleeds because of my iron deficiency, well, this year, nobody is gonna keep me from the cot.
There you go guys! Might you want to help me materialize some of my wishes? Why don’t you come up with your own wish list?
Be rational; be insane… every once in a while! TTFN!
I love you all! Byers! Have a wishful 2009!
