Foul odor from new abattoir disturbs villagers
BACOLOD CITY -- People of Barangay Handumanan are again experiencing bad smell from the new slaughterhouse few weeks after it was given solution by the city government and AVM Bernardo Engineering, the operator of the abbatoir.
Warlito Villaflor of Purok Saturn, in an interview, said it was terrible situation every time they breathe affecting their daily chores because of the foul odor.
“When we went to City Hall few weeks ago, the ‘bad smell’ was gone after City Administrator Rogelio Balo called the attention of AVM Bernardo and drawn out remedies, but I was surprised these days the foul odor returned,” he added.
Initial investigation showed that there was a ‘leakage’ on the water coming from the water treatment facility of the abattoir going to the creek.
“We are calling the attention of AVM Bernardo as well as the city on this matter,” he appealed.
City Administrator Rogelio Balo said as a solution they implemented the ‘zero-discharge’ from AVM’s water treatment facility.
A group of farmers using the water pump was the one who siphoned the water from the facility going to their respective farm fields located around the slaughterhouse vicinity.
“The plan was very successful after we implemented zero-discharge and we gained positive feedbacks from the people around,” he added.
Yesterday he said probably because of heavy rains the treatment facility became full and water went to the creek.
But he added, it’s because of the natural phenomenon and they cannot control it.
It is better according to Balo to talk to the officials of the AVM because the city has already laid down the actual solution and it is up for them to maintain it.
AVM officials cannot be reached for comment as of press time.
