Capiz ‘big-time’ chess tourney slated May 9-10
ROXAS CITY – Sixty-four chess enthusiasts are expected to troop to the province of Capiz when the 2009 “Duso…Oras na,” individual mixed masters chess active tournament unfolds May 9-10 at the 2nd floor of Gaisano Marketplace in San Roque Extension here.
The said event is sponsored by Gov. Victor A. Tanco and the provincial government of Capiz, in cooperation with Sen. Mar Roxas and organized by the Capiz Chess Association (CCA), Inc., the only chess group here affiliated with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
The competition will adopt the 6-round Swiss system format with time control of 25 minutes for each player and the game must be finished within fifty minutes.
The prizes awaiting the winners are P12,000 for the champion, P7,000 for 2nd place, P5,000 for third place, P4,000 for 4th place and P3,000 for fifth place.
The sixth to tenth place finishers will receive P1,000 each while the 11th to 15th place finishers will receive P500 each. The top kiddie and lady performer will get P1,500 each.
The said tournament will feature the best woodpushers in Region VI like FIDE master (FM) Nouri Hamed of Escalante City, FM Sander Severino of Bacolod City, former Olympiad national master (NM) Rodrigo Atotubo of Talisay City; NMs Cesar Mariano and Ernesto Jayme, both of Iloilo City; Aklan lone national master Wilfredo Neri and Capiz first NM Francis Jocson.
More fine and promising chess players are expected to test their mettle over the 64 square of the chessboard in the like of Ted Ian Montoyo, Raymund de la Peña, Jerich Cajeras and Marvin Teng of Negros Occidental; Horizon Villanueva, Rommel Ganzon, Jay Fortunado and lady ace Joyce Mariano of Iloilo province; Veteran Joey Nabor, Herly Pastrana, Gonzalo Fernandez Jr. and Allen Mirano of Aklan; and Boy Descalzo of Antique.
Capiz will bannered by NM Jocson and backstopped by veteran campaigner engineer Anthony Arcangeles, Francisco Lamayo Jr, Ariel Andrada, Joesel Tumanon, George Philip Vito and Filamer Christian College standouts Argie Nobleza, Aivan Delgado and Mary Joy Bernada, including Sapianon “giant killer” Kristian Nicolas.
Gov. Tanco said:“I know that this tournament is a battle of the great thinkers in the region and we are here in Capiz to unite for one Western Visayas.”
“This event is a welcome development to chess aficionados especially those who want to uplift their level of competition and have the chance to see the finest and promising woodpushers in Region 6,” Tanco added.
Registration fee of P150 will be collected from all non-title participants and P100 from titled players and regular CCA members.
