Certified seeds distributed to Kabankalan farmers
Certified Seeds distribution was availed by farmers from the different barangays in Kabankalan City recently.
Present during the short program were Mayor Pedro Zayco, Jr., Vice Mayor Delia Anacan with Councilors Jose Dumaguete and Severino Nacional, vice chairman on committee on agriculture.
Dr. Nemesio Cañete, in his message, said this project is now on its fifth year whose goal is to attain food sufficiency in the city. The certified seeds will help increase the rice yield of the farmers by almost by 30 percent, said Dr. Cañete.
At present, the city has a reserve of 1,007 sacks of certified seeds worth Php 2.1 M. Given priority to buy the seeds are Kabankalan farmers. They will only pay half of the price of each sack whose actual cost is P1,200. In order that more farmers can avail of this program, each farmer is only allowed to buy two sacks good for two hectares of ricefield, said Dr. Cañete.
Mayor Zayco informed the farmers to report immediately any infestation in their ricefields for assistance at the city agriculture office. He was applauded when the mayor announced that a corn mill will soon be constructed in Kabankalan to help corn producer city process their corn.
Vice Mayor Anacan said that the city is doing all its best to help the farmers as these are the people who can help the city realize its food sufficiency program. (Eddie M. Yap)
