21 Iloilo barangays compete in 'Clean and Green' tilt
A total of 21 city barangays representing seven city districts here will compete in the citywide Clean and Green contest spearheaded by city mayor Jerry P. Treñas and the Solid Waste Management Board.
The 21 barangays will vie for cash prizes of P30,000 for the first place; P20,000 for second and P10,000 for the third on top of P500,000 worth of barangay projects as a windfall prize for the champion barangay.
Treñas said barangay chairmen will receive their certificate of recognition as finalists in the clean and green contest Barangay Category on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in his office with the expected presence of DENR-Environment Management Bureau Regional Director Oscar Cabanayan and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Evelyn Trompeta.
Treñas said aside from the barangays, the competition is also open for the selection of cleanest and greenest district and plaza with the winner staking its claim to P1 million worth in development projects.
The competition kicked off in June with the start of elimination round of city barangays per district by a board of judges composed of representatives from civic clubs, non-government organizations and government agencies. The eliminations culminated last July 10, 2009.
The 21 finalist barangays will be re-evaluated including inspection of plazas and districts starting July 16 until August 31 while the grand awarding ceremony will be held on September 15, 2009 for the champion in barangay, plaza and district categories.
The finalists are barangays Dungon A, San Jose and Ma. Cristina in Jaro district; barangays San Isidro, Jereos and Magsaysay Village in La Paz district; barangays Mansaya, Progreso and Don Esteban in Lapuz district; barangays Sto Domingo, Sta Cruz and Dulonan in Arevalo district; barangays Monica-Blumentritt, Villa Anita and San Jose in the city proper district; barangays San Rafael, Bakhaw and PHHC Blk 17 in Mandurriao district; and barangays San Pedro, North Fundidor and North Baluarte in Molo district.
Treñas said that the contest is an initiative by the city to attract barangay residents to comply with the provisions of Republic Act 9003 and to make their surroundings clean and green for healthy living.
The city is also slated to vie in the regional and national Clean and Green or Gawad sa Kapaligiran competition slated to start by October this year.
The city is a Hall of Fame regional awardee in the same competition in 2006-2008 in the Highly Urbanized City Category. (PNA)
