Joint efforts of residents made Brgy. San Rafael win
The combined efforts of barangay officials and residents led to the victory of Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao in the 2009 Clean and Green contest.
This was revealed by San Rafael Barangay Captain Azucena Tabuyoc after topping 179 other barangays in city in the recent Clean and Green contest.
San Rafael got the first place in the barangay category. They received P30,000 cash prize and P500,000 worth of projects from the city government. A certificate of recognition for implementing Best Practices in comprehensive community involvement in cleaning and greening the community was also given to the barangay.
Sto. Domingo in Arevalo got the second place and North Fundidor, Molo ranked third in the barangay category. The second placer received P20,000, trophy and certificate of recognition while the 3rd placer received P15,000 cash prize, trophy and certificate of recognition.
In the same contest, Plaza Libertad was chosen as best plaza in the plaza category and Arevalo district in the district category. The other winners in the plaza category are La Paz as second place and Arevalo, 3rd place. Molo district got the second place in the district category and Jaro in the 3rd place. Winners received cash prizes, trophies and certificates of recognition.
Tabuyoc, in an interview over dySI Super Radyo’s Markado program with Boboy Sombero said they did not spend much in making their barangay clean and green. The Pison family and the commercial establishments donated materials such as paints for the use of the barangay.
A number of establishments in Pison Avenue is under Brgy. San Rafael. The portion of the barangay which used to be fishpond area was reclassified into commercial area. The opening of new roadways opened the development in the area.
Tabuyoc boasted that with the cooperation of the residents one cannot find wastes like candy wrappers or plastics scattered in the barangay. The residents are all in one in keeping the barangay clean. We tried hard to get the first place because of the P500,000 worth of projects for the barangay.
When asked what they will do with their cash prize, Tabuyoc said they will allocate their winnings in the construction of uncompleted concrete road. The concrete road leading towards the barangay hall is still unfinished.
She said they want all their roads be concretized rather than asphalt overlayed. The asphalt-overlay is easily destroyed. The continuation of the unfinished road is a separate project of the barangay from the P500,000 worth of projects to be given by the city government.
There are also road projects in the barangay which were implemented through Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr.
