The streetdancing trophies design
Festive, colorful and rustic. That is how Raymond Legaspi designed the trophies were designed for the winners of this year’s MassKara Festival streetdancing competitions that begin Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009
Bacoleno Raymund Legaspi, who is one of the most exciting new artists in the Philippine scene, designed the trophies.
Legaspi said the trophies depict so much of Bacolod City as a fun place to be in. They were made to be very bright and lively especially during the night because they are inspired for a ‘night of magic’, he said.
They were designed with glitter and glamour using a combination of colors and paint with much sophistication so winners will feel truly proud receiving them, he said.
Legaspi said he used free-hand painting approach using acrylic in designing the trophies, playing on touches, textures and colors. He said the technique and colors he used had his personal touch, adding that he put his all in the design and had fun doing it.
He worked on them for an estimate of eight hours with a few breaks. “There should be a time to stop, otherwise they will look overworked,” he said.
He said he likes to use bright colors in his art works, and very seldom uses dark ones.
Legaspi said he started painting professionally about four years ago. He worked in advertising in Manila for 20 years before that, with designing on the side.
He said it is his first time to design the MassKara Festival streetdancing trophies, and he feels honored that his talent is being recognized.
The streetdancing competitions are scheduled on Oct. 15 for the schools category, Oct. 16 for the Electric MassKara Dancing Competition, Oct. 17 for the barangay category, and Oct. 18 for the open category.
The basic forms of the trophies were made by Charlie Co who first came out with it in 2004. Since then, the Silver MassKara Festival Organization has been tapping various Bacolod artists to put their mark on the trophies still using the original forms created by Co. After Co in 2004, other artists who did the trophies were Dennis Ascalon and Israel Gonzales.
Aside from the trophies, the SMFO also taps Bacolod artists to do the festival logo. In 2004, filmmaker Peque Gallaga did the logo and he was followed Barry Cervantes in 2007 and Lee Santiago in 2008.
For this year, Legaspi was asked to do both the logo and the trophies.
