ABC: Abortion and breast cancer
According to Pro-Life advocates, there’s a new reason why women should shun from using the Pill.
Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer, who specializes in infectious diseases and proponent of Human Life International in the Philippines, presented a finding by the World Health Organization that oral contraceptives can cause cancer to humans and that 599,000 deaths yearly are due to breast cancer.
He said that progesterone in pills can cause high blood (making blood sticky), increase risk of blot clots, cause breast cancer and heart disease. “The risk continues even after they stop taking the birth control pills. The effect is irreversible,” he said.
He also cited several problems that can occur with the use of the estrogen pills, like loss of sex drive, headaches, acne, weight gain, vaginal infections, depression and gall bladder diseases.
Progesterone and estrogen prevents the egg from being released from the ovaries because they make the uterus believe that it is pregnant. They make the uterus a hostile environment for the child to be conceived.
He said that if smoking companies put a warning sign on their products, perhaps makers of the Pill should also indicate “Warning: This can cause breast cancer. Take at your own risk,” on their label.
He presented this during the press conference on the link between contraceptives use and breast cancer last week.
With this development, I agree with Dr. Bullecer’s suggestion that doctors should tell their patients the truth. There are still many options on how to control pregnancy especially when you are not married before the sacrament of matrimony (thus sex is not allowed), want to space your child bearing or not emotionally or physically ready for parenthood. For the Catholic Church, the natural family planning method and abstinence are the options. For pro-choice advocates, there are several options you can discuss with your doctors. The use of the pill will be presented as one of these options. But now, you know your risks in taking the Pill.

The book by Elizabeth Gilbert, entitled “Eat, Pray and Love,” presents different ways for a person to accomplish happiness. First and foremost, one should be free. Gilbert applied these in her life and has become a free individual. Her pointers on freedom are:
Life’s metaphors are God’s instructions.
You have just climbed up and above the roof, there is nothing between you and the Infinite. Now, let go.
The day is ending, it’s time for something that was beautiful to turn into something else that is beautiful. Now, let go.
With all your heart, ask for grace and let go.
Forgive others, forgive yourself and let them go.
Let your intention be freedom from useless suffering. Then, let go.
Watch the heat of the day pass into the cool night, let go.
When the karma of a relationship is done, only love remains. It’s safe. Let go.
When the past has passed from you at last, let go. Then climb down and begin the rest of your life. With great joy.
A very inspiring piece. I’ll discuss more about “finding yourself” and not expecting other people to bring happiness for you, with “Eat, Pray and Love” as a guide. In my future columns.
