Climate Change: A must teach topic in public high schools
BACOLOD CITY — Teachers in the Division of Bacolod City teach Climate Change to their students systematically as it is a vital part of the Philippine Secondary Schools Learning Competency (PSSLC).
According to Education Supervisor I for Science and Health Glody D. Castillon, students need to have a good knowledge on climate change so that that they are ready and know what to do as the phenomenon affects everyone and the environment.
The topic is equally given importance in school activities like the Science Club which is a fixed yearly activity in all schools here.
Tree planting, she said, is encouraged among students as this help reduce greenhouse gases.
“Students are not only encouraged to plant inside the school campus but also outside school vicinity and in their homes.”
The tall tress in most schools in the city is a result of the sustained effort to promote a Clean and Green campus environment that was started many years back by the incumbent local chief executive, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, she told PIA.
Recycling is also promoted among students in their subject Technology Livelihood and Home Economics (TLE) where youngsters are given the chance to be creative by making something useful out of thrown candy and biscuit wrappers.
The project is linked to the Solid Waste Management goals of the school where garbage segregation is taught in all high school levels. (PIA-LOL)
