Filariasis mass treatment in Capiz ends Jan. 30
ROXAS CITY – The mass drug administration (MDA) for filariasis in the province will end on Jan. 30 this year.
“But there will be a mapping up period from Feb. 1 to 15 to cover those who have been missed by the campaign,” said Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) Medical Specialist IV Evelyn T. Bolido.
The MDA for filariasis to interrupt the transmission of the disease was launched by the PHO last Nov. 17 in support to President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo’s Executive Order No. 369 which declared the month of November as mass treatment period for filariasis in established endemic areas.
The province has been declared by the Department of Health (DOH) as the 41st endemic province in the country early this year.
The campaign covers Capiceños aged 2 years and older.
Filariasis is a disease caused by worms transmitted to humans through bites of infected female mosquitoes. It may manifest as recurrent fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and urine with color similar to rice washing.
Taking the medicines will stop the progression of the disease and prevent its transmission to others. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
