74 HS studes in WV pass DOST S&T scholarship exam
A total of 74 successful fourth year high school students passed this year’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undergraduate Scholarship Examination.
Of the 74 DOST scholarship qualifiers, 57 met the criteria for the S&T Scholarship under Republic Act 7687, also known as the Science Scholarship Act of 1994. RA 7687 is the science scholarship program for the poor and the underprivileged but deserving students. The program seeks to massively increase the S&T manpower pool of the country by providing more scholarship slots for both BS and technology courses. The DOST continuously implements this program to serve S&T-inclined youth whose economic status restrains them from pursuing tertiary or post-secondary courses which will enable them to become productive citizens of the country.
The remaining 17 qualifiers belong to the Merit Scholarship Award. This is a regular scholarship in baccalaureate degree programs in specified courses open to qualified incoming college freshmen from the top 5% of the graduating high school class.
Conferred scholars will be entitled to scholarship privileges per academic year which includes tuition fees per semester, book allowance per academic year and a monthly stipend for the 10-month duration, group health and accident insurance, and additional privileges during summer if required in the curriculum.
DOST Region VI is set to conduct orientation for the qualifiers of the 2010 DOST S&T Scholarship Program for April 8-14, 2010 at the designated venues. Qualifiers are advised to contact DOST Regional Office VI at telephone numbers 320-0093, 320-0907 and 320-0908 or they may also visit the office at Magsaysay Village, La Paz, Iloilo City. Those in the provincial areas may also visit the Provincial S&T Centers (PSTC). (MASASalazar/DOST VI)
