Youth for Jamora growing stronger
Mayoralty candidate Larry Jamora’s support among the youth sector continues to grow in numbers as well as in active participation. What with the regular classes now over, student leaders from various colleges and universities in the city are flocking in droves to the Jamora camp to volunteer their services and get involved in Jamora’s campaign.
Last Friday, the start of the campaign period, a youth group who call themselves “Tropang Bida” conquered Smallville – considered the place to go for most of the city’s youth — with an impressive street dance–campaign for Larry Jamora. Tropang Bida is composed of about 50 high school and college students from the different campuses and different barangays in the city who all have volunteered to campaign in the best way they know how – the language of song and dance.
Those who witnessed the impromptu show right on the street in front of Flow Restaurant came away quite impressed by the ardent performance and creativity of the kids. “Ibang klase (this is different),” said a Smallville habitue who was awed by the performance. Tropang Bida plans to take their unique campaign strategy to the various barangays.
On the other hand, other youth volunteers, particularly university student council leaders are conducting their own independent efforts outside of the Jamora official campaign. They are now recruiting fellow students to join the cause for Jamora’s mayoralty bid. The students, however, do not want to be identified with any political movement.
Within the Jamora camp, a youth movement is also taking great strides in penetrating the various barangays by organizing youth forums and other activities focused on youth development.
Jamora has clearly captured the youth’s hope and imagination. Apparently, Jamora gained the support and sympathy of the youth when he came out with a clear and well-defined platform of government which is absent in the campaign of the other camps.
Moreover, Jamora’s outstanding performance in the various forums conducted by the various media and other civic groups and held in various campuses captivated the students.
“Jamora! Jamora! Jamora!” cried the students in the University of San Agustin during the ABS-CBN Sambuwa. “Vote Larry! Vote Larry! Vote Larry!” shouted the students from Iloilo National Hgh School during Bombo’s Debate. UP students were more circumspect during the Atubangay Forum at UP Auditorium, they were simply overheard talking to each other after hearing Jamora, “Now we know whom to vote for.”
