NSO Aklan conducts provincewide census
KALIBO, Aklan – Get ready for the 2010 Census of Population and Housing as the National Statistics Office (NSO) enumerators will collect demographic data next month.
Statistician II Rodelyn Panadero said the population census is carried out in all the 327 barangays of the 17 municipalities of Aklan from May 17 to June 11. The census will be conducted by NSO enumerators to determine the total number of population and households in every barangay in the municipalities across the country for a period of 25 days.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo recently signed Proclamation No. 2028 declaring May this year as National Census Month. Under Batas Pambansa Bilang 72 on June 11, 1980, NSO is the lead agency in the conduct of the 2010 population censuses every 10 years. Executive Order No. 121 also designated NSO as the major statistical agency responsible for generating general-purpose statistics for the National Statistical Coordination Board.
The data gathered in the 2010 May census, the 13th census of population and the sixth census of housing since the 1903 first census will be used as the basis for the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of local government units and for the creation of new LGUs and congressional districts.
“NSO has tapped school teachers augmented by trained enumerators to gather data on the complete count of household units and population by barangays and municipalities. The authorized census enumerators will also interview the residents of information regarding their marital status, age, sex, citizenship, relationship to household head and educational attainment,” Panadero said.
NSO enumerators through house-to-house visits will ask the people of their socio-economic characteristics, whether overseas worker, ethnicity, literacy and other variables – language/dialect generally spoken, upland/forestland population, among others.
As part of its preparations for the census, the NSO trainors from Metro Manila and Iloilo, NSO Provincial Statistics Officer Blas Solidum and Panadero will conduct Third Level Training on April 19 to 24 for Census Area Supervisors, Assistant Area Supervisors, District Statistical Officers and Statistical Coordination Officers in the province on how to fill up the questionnaires and administrative forms.
Panadero said NSO will also spearhead the fourth and last level training for team supervisors, mostly school principals, and for the municipal level hired enumerators or census-takers on April 27 to May 1 before the start of the nationwide May census.
In a related development, about 75,000 personnel will serve as census enumerators, supervisors and processors for the estimated 94 million population and an estimated 18.4 million households for the year 2010.
NSO Aklan is encouraging the public to participate and cooperate with the authorized enumerators involved in the 2010 census to get the accurate and exact information.
Aklan is subdivided into 17 municipalities with a population of 495,122 as of the last census. (BR Zabal)
