AFP-CRS cites need for better cooperation during disasters
A cohesive, persistent and dynamic partnership among various organizations is vital for broader public service and in responding to crisis.
This was the message of Brig. Gen. Francisco N. Cruz Jr., commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Civil Relations Service (AFP-CRS) during the 28th Radio Emergency Associated Communications Teams National Convention held recently in Cebu City.
Cruz also urged members of the civic volunteer group Regional Emergency Assistance Communications Team (REACT) Philippines to further extend their reach of public service and the spirit of volunteerism.
REACT Philippines is a partner of the AFP and government in providing expeditious, sustained, and vital communications during disasters and calamities, especially when loss of electricity or destruction of telecommunication relay stations cripples cellular phones.
With around 12,000 members, it is also deemed as the largest volunteer civic communications network, with linkages with agencies such as the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Alay Lakad Foundation Inc., and Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), among others.
In the local scene, REACT also works with local government units (LGUs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the implementation of various socio-civic projects and activities.
Cruz, as REACT’s honorary chairman, expressed his appreciation for the group’s volunteerism efforts of nearly three decades.
“Your radios undoubtedly provide a reliable means of coordinating rescue and relief efforts, and the professionalism, courage, and selflessness of your members ensure the continuity of communications service to the people of affected areas,” he said in addressing REACT members.
The convention gathered members from its regional chartered groups across the country. They also inducted their new set of national officers with Eugene “Highway Man” Firaza as the elected national president.
It was also attended by Senator Richard Gordon as the event’s guest of honor.
“Through our years of partnership with REACT, we saw the group’s positive societal impact, especially at such times where the spirit of volunteerism has waned. In fact, REACT helps reignite the passion of civic participation. Like our brave soldiers, REACT shares our aspiration of uniting people and communities, and helping restore hope in the advent of tragedies,” said Cruz. (PNA)
