Binay defeats Roxas in 2 towns in Capiz
ROXAS CITY – Makati Mayor and vice presidential candidate Jejomar Binay, standard bearer of Pwersa ng Masa (PMP), has defeated Liberal Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Sen. Mar Roxas in the latter’s hometowns: Dao and Ivisan, Capiz.
Official and final results coming from the Provincial Comelec showed that Binay garnered 7,308 votes in Dao while Roxas got only 6,559 votes with a margin of 749 votes in favor of Binay.
In Ivisan, Binay enjoyed 5,826 votes while Roxas acquired 5,796 votes with a margin of 30 votes still in favor of Binay.
Roxas, a native of Roxas City, Capiz had been congressman in 1st district of Capiz for several terms. He was then Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) secretary during the stints of former President Joseph Estrada and President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo before he became senator in 2004.
As of 12 noon yesterday, the provincial canvassers composed of Comelec, DepEd, Judiciary and other government agencies, printed 14 towns including Roxas City for the complete results, however, Dumalag and Cuartero have yet to transmit its results, thus causing delay of proclamation.
Of the 14 towns and one city, Roxas garnered 182,071 votes while Binay got only 82,536 votes with a total margin of 99,535 votes in favor of the former.
It was learned that in 2nd district, Lakas-Kampi-CMD is led by outgoing Cong. Fredenil Castro who is an ally of former Agriculture Usec Jocelyn “Jocjoc” Bolante, vice chair of Ugyon Kita Capiz (UKC).
Observers said that Castro, who is a former ally of Roxas, was a factor why Binay defeated Roxas in two Capiz towns. Castro reportedly thrown his support to Binay instead of Edu Manzano, vice presidential candidate of Lakas-Kampi-CMD.
Capiz province has 16 towns and one component city with a total of 431,368 voters.
