Jailbird nabbed shortly after escape
By now, Timothy Paul Tubola probably knew what short-lived freedom is all about.
This, as he was arrested, by chance, shortly after escaping from detention at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) District Jail in Brgy. Ungka, Jaro, Iloilo City. Reports said that Tubola, who is facing a charge for robbery with homicide, sneaked out from the BJMP at around 1:15 a.m. yesterday by scaling at the 25-foot perimeter fence located at the back portion of the district jail.
He then jumped at the nearby Christ the King Memorial Park and flagged down a passing tricycle.
Tubola first told the driver to ferry him to Brgy. Dungon, Jaro district.
But when they reached the area, he changed his mind and ordered the driver that he wanted to be transported in La Paz district.
When they reached the La Paz area, he told the tricycle driver to bring him to Rizal instead.
Tubola’s fickle-mindedness caused the driver to cast doubt on him.
The driver then flagged a roving patrol car of La Paz Police Station.
It was then known that the police were already alerted about the BJMP prisoner’s escape.
When arrested, the suspect claimed that he bolted out because he felt nostalgic of his wife and child.
“Sa balay ko tani madiretso kag ma-surrender man dayon,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, BJMP district jail warden Supt. Samson Abaygar said, the duty jailguards knew about the escape following a commotion caused by some prisoners.
When they checked, it was only then that they knew that one prisoner was already missing.
A manhunt operation was immediately conducted.
Abaygar explained that they have allowed some prisoners to go out of their cells at the wee hours of the day due to limited water supply.
“Wala kami sang tubig diri. So, naga overtime ni sila para matagaan sang chance nga makasalod sang tubig,” he added.
As this developed, Abaygar said that he already tasked investigators to probe the incident.
“Our investigators are trying to determine the liabilities of the duty jailers... if they were remiss in their vigilance in looking after the inmates when the incident happened,” he added.
