New studes prefer biz courses: CHED
Another academic year is approaching. Enrolment starts early this week as classes will officially begin on June 14, 2010.
Based on enrolment profile of the Commission on Higher Education 6 (CHED-6) in the last three years, high school graduates preferred to take business education, medical related courses, teacher education, and information technology courses.
According to Dr. Rex Casiple, Assistant Regional Director of CHED-6, in 2009-2010, business education courses topped with the highest enrollees (24%), followed by medical related courses (18%), teacher education (11%) and Information Technology (IT) with 11%.
Casiple emphasized that the courses under the business education discipline are Bachelor of Science (BS) Commerce, BS Business Administration, BS Hotel and Restaurant Management, BS Tourism, BS Accountancy/Accounting Technology, and BS Office Administration/Management.
Meanwhile, under the medical-related courses are BS Nursing, Midwifery, BS Radiologic Technology, BS Medical Technology, Pharmacy and Doctor of Medicine while under the teacher education are Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEED) and Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSED).
Also, courses under the IT discipline are BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology and BS Information System.
Casiple added that Agriculture and Fisheries ranked last in the ten clusters of disciplines with only 3% of the total enrolment.
On the other hand, CHED has identified priority programs for Academic Year 2010-2011. Among these are maritime education, information technology, agriculture and fisheries and engineering.
