DepEd launches week-long Brigada Eskwela
In preparation for the school opening next month, the Department of Education (DepED) here will launch its Brigada Eskwela 2010 starting today up to Friday.
Brigada Eskwela is a nationwide voluntary effort of all school stakeholders to do minor repairs and cleaning of schools.
Dr. Erlinda Gencaya, Iloilo City School Division Superintendent, said the activity encourages the volunteers to provide a little bit of materials such as paint, cement, lumber, brooms, and garbage cans to help clean and beautify the schools as well as the classrooms.
According to Gencaya, last year’s Brigade Eskwela was also successfully done with the help of stakeholders like students, teachers, parents, school administrators, community, other school organizations and some private groups.
She also expects that this year’s activity would be very meaningful.
Meanwhile, the opening of classes was moved to June 15 from June 14 as mandatory for public schools while for private schools, opening of classes will depend on their school’s administrator as long as they will complete the 203 school days.
During the first day of school year 2010-2011, Gencaya said that they are expecting some 62,000 students enrolled from different schools here to attend their classes.
There are 52 public elementary schools and 13 secondary schools in this city.
Gencaya said there is no classroom shortage in the elementary schools here except in some secondary schools where there are big enrollments.
The ratio of students to classroom is at the average of 35-40 students for every room both in the elementary and secondary.
