‘Oplan Kandado’ nets more violators
The campaign of the Bureau of Internal Revenue Region 11 in Iloilo City against tax cheaters under the “Oplan Kandado” earned positive results anew as two restaurants in the city were padlocked last week.
The two restaurants are the Nato and Helen Talabahan in Brgy. Bolilao, Mandurriao, Iloilo City and Allan’s Talabahan at Oton, Iloilo.
BIR 11 Regional Director Glen Geraldino said the agency found discrepancies in their tax declaration.
“Nakakatulong sa amin ang mga complaints na ‘yan. We actually do verification. If we find potentials on the campaign, we really take that seriously,” Geraldino said.
From the last quarter of 2009 until first quarter of 2010, the two restaurants understated their revenues or income by more than 30 percent.
Nato and Helen Talabahan owners claimed that their daily income is only P5,000 to P6,000, but a BIR surveillance pegged the restaurant’s daily revenue at P20,000 to P27,000.
Although Nato and Helen Talabahan owner Helen Robles did not confirm that their daily earnings reach that amount, she admitted her fault.
Robles said she doesn’t know that her staff declares such a low amount for their income, adding that she failed to monitor the restaurant’s bookkeeping operations because of her busy schedule.
BIR 11 padlocked her restaurant from July 8 to 10 as the management is expected to settle their tax deficiencies.
Meanwhile, Allan’s Talabahan is said to have a daily earning of P10,000 to P20,000. However, it declared a meager P2,000 revenue.
The restaurant’s management admitted that they received a warning for the closure, but they claimed the owner got sick, causing a delay of the settlement.
Meanwhile, the BIR’s Handang Maglingkod Program which has been institutionalized and re-launched last March aims to strengthen the delivery of fast, efficient, and courteous front line services to taxpayers all over the country through a nationwide competition.
The competition has two categories – district category, participated by all BIR Revenue District offices, and national office category- participated by the Large Taxpayers Service, Collection Service, Assessment Service and Legal Service of the National Office.
The Regional Board HMP board of judges is headed by the BIR regional director as chairperson and composed of members who are presidents or designated representatives of the local Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chapters members.
They will be provided with the criteria for judging by the HMP Coordinating Committee.
The judging schedule is from July 1 to 28 while the awarding will be on August 2 during the BIR anniversary celebration.
